As the Local Government Commission of Inquiry continues probing the financial activities of area councils across the country, Sarjo Sanneh, a nominated councilor representing market vendors, has admitted that the ‘Salibo’ allowances BAC was paying to them was “illegal”.

In her testimony, Sanneh admitted that the ‘Salibo’ allowances they were being paid by the Brikama Area Council (BAC) during the feast of Koriteh and Tobaski were ‘illegal’.

During her testimony, her written statement was admitted into evidence. Councilor Sanneh was also a member of the Market Committee, Agriculture Committee and The Environment.

“The Market Committee is usually busy during festive periods as our responsibilities include; conducting assessments and allocation of spaces to vendors during the festive periods.”

According to her, one of the major problems affecting vendors at the market is limited ‘spaces’ where they can sell.

She revealed that in each committee sitting, they are paid five hundred dalasis, adding: “However, we use to receive another payment when we performed oversight functions in the market and this payment are usually made

during Koriteh and Tobaski.”

The current leadership at the BAC, she went on, stopped the payment with the claim that it was illegal, saying: “Some of the councilors even make inquiries in order to know why the payment was stopped. However, the councilors that made the inquiries were told that such payments were illegal.”
