Brikama Area Council (BAC) under the leadership of chairman Yankuba Darboe last Monday commissioned a new waste collection fleet at a ceremony held at the Council’s ground in Brikama.

The new waste collection fleet obtained from Espace Motors includes five (5) Garbage Trucks, one (1) Skip Bin Loader and one (1) Water Tank.

The initiative forms part of the Council’s broader efforts to strengthen waste collection and management within the region, while enhancing service delivery across wider spectrum.

At the formal commissioning, Lamin Singhateh, Public Relations Officer (PRO) at the Brikama Area Council, described the event as a significant milestone in the history of the council, as they commission a new waste collection fleet.

PRO Singhateh underscored the importance of paying taxes to the council, making reference to their strategy taken; using tax-payers money, which led to the purchase of this new waste collection vehicles.

“This tells you how your council is investing in providing better services to keep environments clean, improve response times, and build a healthier environment.” he added.

For his part, Yankuba Darboe, chairman of Brikama Area Council shed light on the significance of the new fleet, saying it would significantly boost waste collection and environmental management services across the region.

Darboe recalled that at the time of assuming office, expectations were high but he asked himself whether he will be able to fulfill those expectations.

“I thank God for at least delivering not 100 percent, but 50 percent of those expectations.” he stated.

Chairman Darboe noted that he inherited a Council that is highly indebted, further explaining measures taken to close the existing loopholes, while mobilising resources to buy equipment at the council.

“When we took office, we inherited a council in a deep financial crisis with millions of dalasi in deficit. Most departments were non-functional and public services had nearly collapsed. But we took a bold action and we implemented stringent measures against corruption, prioritized transparency, and rebuilt trust in our institutions. In just two years, your council has turned things around and today stands as proof of that transformation.” he stated.

These fleet of garbage trucks, he added, are the kinds of equipment needed, adding that the fleet can bring massive revenue for the people of West Coast when appropriate measures are taken.

This, he said, would greatly limit the struggles households face when it comes to waste management, adding that they promised to mitigate the issue of waste within the region.

The trucks he added, will start operations on August 18th 2025, this after proper training of drivers on proper handling measures to ensure they serve their purposes.

The trucks have been divided into zones, and collection of waste from households will be done once every two weeks and each bag costs D20 with tickets issuance.

The BAC chairman further reaffirmed his commitment to supporting youth-led initiatives and education for the people of West Coast.

He, however, acknowledged that transparency and accountability is the driving factor for any valuable achievement, adding that their popular mantra ‘don’t steal’ has helped them generate D1.3M from January to end  June this year.

That achievement, he said, had never happened at the council, adding that they did it, targeting another one hundred million by the end of year.
