Ambassador Yusupha A. Kah: The making of a Gambian Diplomatic icon

For more than four decades, Honourable Ambassador Yusupha Alieu Kah has dedicated his professional life to serving The Gambia through public administration, economic policymaking, diplomacy and international engagement.

Regarded as one of the country’s most accomplished career civil servants and diplomats, Ambassador Kah’s journey reflects a rare combination of technical expertise, leadership experience and commitment to national development.

His public service career began in 1983 as a Budget Officer and Planner at the Ministry of Economic Planning and Industrial Development. From there, he rose through the ranks, serving in several key government institutions, including the Office of the President, Office of the Vice President, Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Employment, Ministry of Communications and Ministry of the Interior.

Through years of dedication and professionalism, Ambassador Kah became one of The Gambia’s longest-serving Permanent Secretaries, before transitioning into Cabinet leadership.

Between 2009 and 2011, he held several important ministerial portfolios, including Minister for Trade, Industry and Employment; Minister for Economic Planning and Industrial Development; Minister for Trade, Regional Integration and Employment; and Minister for Works, Construction and Infrastructure.

His leadership during this period placed him at the centre of key national discussions on economic planning, infrastructure development, trade and public policy.

Ambassador Kah’s strong academic background has also contributed to his success in public service. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Management from Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho, United States, and a Master of Science degree in Economic Policy and Planning from Northeastern University, United States.

Beyond national leadership, Ambassador Kah has represented The Gambia with distinction in the international arena.

He served as Ambassador to Belgium and Head of Mission to the European Commission, while also receiving accreditation to several European countries, including the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

He later served as Ambassador to France, with concurrent accreditation to Switzerland, Hungary and Romania. During his diplomatic assignments, he represented The Gambia at major international institutions, including the World Trade Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, International Fund for Agricultural Development, World Food Programme and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

As Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and UNESCO, Ambassador Kah played an important role in advancing The Gambia’s interests on issues including international trade, human rights, labour, sustainable development, humanitarian affairs and global cooperation.

His outstanding contribution to public service has earned him national recognition, including his appointment as an Officer of the National Order of the Republic of The Gambia.
