The much-anticipated tournament which kicked off on Friday, 26th January 2024, at the Africell Kanifing Municipality Park near the traffic light, according to officials will be extended to other regions soon.
The marathon knockout which lasted over five hours, drew a crowd of enthusiastic PS5 players and supporters from both the Kanifing Municipality and the West Coast Region. A total of 32 players participated in the competition.
The tournament ended on high note with the award of prizes to top three players. Ronald Senghore, Marcom Manager for Africell, overseeing the PS5 tournament, expressed delight with the enormous talent among the country’s youth, who he said, who are passionate about gaming.
“Organising this tournament aligns with our commitment to empowering them. This competition is more than just a game; it's about engaging the youth in meaningful activities that can potentially help them earn a living." Senghore explained.
The tournament, he went on, is part of Africell's efforts to provide benefits to PS players and contribute to sustainable development.
Senghore announced that the tournament would expand to other parts of the country, ensuring broader youth participation and benefits from the electronic game.
He thus encouraged the youth to stay updated through Africell's social media channels and AfriRadio for more information on the ongoing tournament.
"In business, giving back to the community is essential, and that's exactly what we're doing. This initiative can significantly impact the lives of the youth. The winners could invest their winnings in businesses or support their families, which is why we organised this event." he stated.
Abdoulie Saho, tournament winner, with delight, expressed gratitude to Africell for the opportunity.
"I've been playing this game for 15 years and have joined many competitions, but this is my first win. I'm overwhelmed with happiness," he shared. Saho encouraged everyone to switch to Africell SIM cards, citing the company as the top telecommunication provider in the country.
In addition to the gaming event, Africell also conducted a raffle during the tournament. Two lucky participants won D10,000 each, one winner won a Samsung smart watch while two others won an iPhone 15 each.
