The AWLN was constituted in 2017 by the African Union and the United Nations supported by the Federal Republic of Germany and South Africa at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Network is an African-wide movement of women leaders for the transformation and development of the continent through women’s dynamic engagement and participation in decision making at all levels of society, in line with the Africa agenda 2063 and the global agenda 2030.
Thirty-Two countries have launched their national chapters and The Gambia became the 33rd country to launch hers on the 16th May 2023 at Coco Ocean Resort and Spa Bijilo. The event was attended by high level delegation and dignitaries from around the world.
During the meeting at the Foreign Ministry, Dr. Tangara first congratulated the African Women Leaders Network for a successful launch and vowed his unflinching support to AWLN’s goal of women’s increased participation in decision-making. He commended the iron ladies for their immense and tireless efforts towards the success of the organinsation and supporting women around the globe which has a huge impact towards the development of women in the society and the world at large.
FM Tangara advised the delegation to continue to work as a team, saying that he believes in collective success because that is what would bring impact to the organization.
FM Tangara also emphasized on celebrating our people whiles they are alive and said people like The Gambia High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, H.E. Fatou Bensouda should be celebrated.
Minister Tangara also thanked the National Coordinator and Co-chairperson of the AWLN the national chapter Muna Jallow who worked tirelessly for the success of the launch.
The Special Envoy of the chairperson of the AU Commission on women, peace and security Her Excellency Bineta Diop said her delegation is grateful to the Honourable Dr. Mamadou Tangara for his tireless support, and services to the African Leaders Network which is a huge step to them as an organization.
