ACDHRS in a press release lauded the National Assembly's decision to reject the Women's Amendment Bill 2023, emphasising the importance of maintaining the ban on FGM/C. The Centre called on the Gambia Government to enforce the law rigorously and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
“FGM/C remains a grave human rights violation and a significant public health concern, warranting condemnation from all stakeholders. The fight against this harmful practice has only just begun and requires the active involvement of every individual dedicated to protecting the rights of women and girls,” ACDHRS stated.
ACDHRS highlighted that FGM/C represents an extreme form of discrimination, infringing on the rights to health, freedom from torture and protection from inhuman or degrading treatment.
The Centre reaffirmed its commitment to advocating against the inhumane treatment inflicted on young girls and women under the guise of traditional beliefs or rituals.
ACDHRS therefore urged the Gambia Government to set a strong example by enforcing existing laws and ensuring that violators face the full force of justice. Additionally, the government is encouraged to engage with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to support the full implementation of anti-FGM/C legislation.
