The minister of Interior has stated that ensuring access to financial services and promoting financial inclusion is essential for inclusive growth.

Seyaka Sonko was speaking at the opening of the 24th Annual General Meeting (AGM) organised by The Gambia Police Force Cooperative Credit Union (GPFCCU) held on Saturday at the National Cooperative Credit Union of the Gambia (NACCUG) training center in Kanifing. The theme for this year’s event was; ‘’enhancing inclusive growth and economic development.’’

To that end, Minister Sonko noted that access to credit, savings, insurance, and other financial services enables individuals to invest in their future, start businesses, and protect themselves against economic shocks.

He reminded that infrastructure development, particularly in rural and underserved areas, can help bridge the gap between different regions and promote more equitable economic development.

“This concept of enhancing inclusive growth and economic development, has gained significant attention in both academic and policy circles. The pursuit of economic growth that benefits all segments of society, particularly those who are marginalised or disadvantaged is key.”

Minister Sonko highlighted the need to create opportunities for all individuals to participate in the economic progress of ‘our nation.’

He noted that achieving inclusive growth involves addressing disparities in income, wealth, and access to resources, as well as promoting equality of opportunity and social inclusion.

He reminded that the day is required by laws so as to avail members the opportunity to engage the board and to provide detail information on issues of their concerns and to participate in the future governance process by providing relevant and credible information and ideas.”

For his part, Pa Singhateh, a manager at the Gambia Police Force Cooperative Credit Union (GPFCCU), said they will continue to advocate for more savings and limited expenses to tackle the effects of inflation by managing the limited resources in order to meet their priorities.

This, he said, will help members gain the required knowledge to manage their businesses.
