Youth minister slams Bensouda, puts mayoral ambition alive

Bensouda and Ceesay

Youth and Sports Minister Bakary Y. Badjie has accused Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda’s administration of putting more effort into marketing its achievements than delivering major projects, as he renewed his interest in contesting for the mayoral seat after the 2026 presidential election.

But while keeping his mayoral ambition alive, Mr. Badjie took aim at the record of the current KMC administration, questioning progress on issues that featured prominently in Mr. Bensouda’s 2018 campaign.

He pointed to road construction, waste management, revenue generation and plans to relocate the municipality’s dumpsite, arguing that the council’s performance should be judged by what has been delivered rather than how its achievements are presented.

“His team is good at marketing; they are good at presenting something in the way that they want it; and they communicate it the way they want it, because they have a whole team of people working behind the scenes,” he said.

“So whatever you want is what comes out that’s not delivery.”

Mr. Badjie said the municipality could have taken a different direction had he been elected mayor, while maintaining that his immediate focus remains the presidential election.

Mr. Badjie, a member of President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party, said his interest in the mayoral position remains intact, but any decision will depend on his party’s plans and whether the president has other plans for him.

“My interest remains intact in terms of the mayoral thing, and if the party doesn’t have any other plans, I will definitely give it a shot,” Mr. Badjie said in an interview with Teledal TV.

“I have my intentions; the president might have other plans for me, and it depends on when we get there.”
