Secka argued that the situation is not only disturbing but has also led to an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among people across The Gambia.
"As Gambians, we have always cherished our country as a peaceful nation where people could live, work and travel without constant fear. Sadly, recent incidents, including the tragic killing of my friend and colleague, Yunusa Mbye, have shaken that confidence," he said, reffering to the slain former university student leader.
Mr Secka, who is the President of the Education Students' Association (EDUSA), described Yunusa as a dedicated educator, mentor and patriotic young Gambian who devoted his life to serving others.
He termed his "untimely death" as not only a personal loss but a "national tragedy that" that reminds Gambians that no one is immune to the growing insecurity confronting the country.
H revealed: "As President of the Education Students’ Association (EDUSA), I can confidently say that many students are worried about their safety, both on and off campus. Parents are equally anxious about the well-being of their children, while young people increasingly question whether they can pursue their education and daily activities without fear. This growing sense of insecurity threatens not only lives but also the confidence and productivity of our nation’s youth.
Secka believes this is a time that requires a collective national response. As such, he urged: "Government must strengthen community policing, enhance intelligence gathering, improve street lighting and surveillance in vulnerable areas, and ensure that perpetrators of violent crimes are swiftly brought to justice. At the same time, communities, religious leaders, youth groups, educational institutions, and civil society must work together to promote vigilance, discourage violence, and rebuild the values of mutual respect and social responsibility.
"Security is everyone’s responsibility, but the state has the primary duty to protect lives and property. We owe it to the memory of Yunusa Mbye and every victim of violent crime to ensure that decisive action is taken so that The Gambia remains a safe and peaceful home for all."
