Wade, Sonko dropped from Senegal presidential election

According to official sources, the constitutional council of Senegal published on Saturday the list of eligible candidates for the country’s presidential election on February 25 this year.

The list of eligible candidates, the sources added, exclude Karim Wade and Ousmane Sonko.

Karim Wade’s application is said to have been declared inadmissible out of the 21 candidates who had passed the sponsorship stage. He lately relinquished his French citizenship on 16 January 2024, and submitted his candidature before the final scrutiny.

It would be noted that Ousman Sonko was eliminated for being convicted, with a six-month jail suspension and fined CFA 200 million for defaming Senegalese Tourism Minister Mame Mbaye Niang without proof. The supreme court thereby approved the conviction, while another candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye is remanded since last  year.

The following is the list of the 20 candidates for the Presidential elections to be held on 25 February:

Boubacar CAMARA, Cheikh Tidiane DIÈYE, Déthic FALL, Daouda NDIAYE, Habib SY, Khalifa Ababacar SALL,  Anta Babacar NGOM, Amadou BA, Rose WARDINI, Idrissa SECK, Aliou Mamadou DIA, Serigne MBOUP, Dad Djibril FALL, Mamadou Lamine DIALLO, Mahammed Boun Abdallah DIONNE, EL Hadji Malick GAKOU, Aly Ngouille NDIAYE, El Hadji Mamadou DIAO, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar FAYE, and Thiemo Alassane SALL.
