A medical doctor at Afrimed Clinic in Brusubi on Friday testified in the on-going manslaughter and exposing child to danger case involving Sainabou Mbye, Cherno Mbye and Kibili Dembelly before Justice Ebrima Jaiteh of the Banjul High Court.

The medical doctor, PW8, said he received baby Muhammad Mbye on the 3rd of July 2022 as a patient.

On the 3rd of July around 6 pm, the nurse in the medical unit called me saying “we just received one Muhammad, the nurse called me because the child arrived in a critical condition. “Immediately, I went to the emergency ward to see the patient. When I arrived at the ward, the nurse told me that the child was locked in a car for 4 hours according to the child’s family.”

“When I checked him at that point, all vital signs were low and his pulse was 22 beats per minute (bpm). Therefore, in a normal child of around 2 years, the normal pulse should be between 100 to 120 beats per minute (bpm), but the child had 22 meaning very low, and the normal oxygen saturation level should be above 90 percent but the child had 60 percent oxygen saturation levels (SpO2),” he told the court.

The doctor admitted that he spent limited time with the child because he (child spent about 20 to 30 minutes in Afrimed, adding the child was also wet but he was not vomiting.”

“Were you told or aware that Baby Muhammad was sick prior to the 3rd of July,” Lawyer Combeh asked, but the medical doctor responded in the negative.

At this juncture Senior Counsel M.B. Sowe sought for adjournment since this was the only witness the prosecution had to testify, claiming they would also like to tender the referral document as an exhibit.

Meanwhile, Justice Ebrima Jaiteh informed the prosecution that he didn’t intend to accept the adjournment because prosecutors ought to know that they have to prepare themselves before they appear in court.

“As PW7 has already been discharged and it means now that PW7 will have to be recalled and the original document of the referral form has been produced. The state had almost 2 months before they filed a bill of indictment. They should’ve included the original document in their evidence. (Basically, they should’ve had their house in order prior).”

The case is adjourned for today 17 October at 9:30
