Program manager Ansumana Ceesay was speaking during the regional public information town hall session on the 2024 Draft Constitution Bill in Basse on Wednesday.
The activity, themed "A New Constitution for a New Republic: Get Informed, Get Involved", was launched in September. Besides, the engagement is part of an ongoing campaign that will cover five regions (URR, CRR, NBR, LRR & WCR), reaching approximately 250 participants.
"As we navigate the legislative process, it is crucial to maintain open dialogue" he said.
He indicated that the town hall session offers the opportunity to share thoughts, ask questions and contribute to shaping the nation's future. "let's work together to build consensus and forge a collective vision for a better Gambia," he appealed.
The NCCE program manager said the diverse group of stakeholders, including local and regional authorities, opinion leaders, youth, women, and persons with disabilities has demonstrated commitment to ensure that all voices are heard in this crucial constitutional building process, to ensure that the wishes and aspirations of the citizenry are fully reflected in the draft constitution.
According to him, the bill is not just a document; it is a blueprint for the future. "It outlines how we wish to be governed, how our fundamental rights will be protected, and how we can build a more just and prosperous society," he added.
He also said the process is not only about legislators and policymakers; it is also about the citizens of the Gambia.
"We will discuss the mechanisms for public participation, how you can engage in the process, and how we can ensure that the voices of all sectors of society are heard," he said.
Intrinsically, he said, the main objective is to facilitate comprehensive engagement, participation and understanding of the content of the 2024 Draft Constitution Bill and its progression through the legislative process, from gazetting to the National Assembly and finally to the referendum.
