Gambia Revenue Authority on Wednesday started a strategic training for 40 members of the Gambia Women’s Chamber of Commerce (GWCC).

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the training held at the Senegambia Beach Hotel, deputy Commissioner General Essa Jallow said the seminar was out to deepen understanding of taxpayers’ rights as well as the process and procedures of paying tax and duties in The Gambia.

The engagement formed part of GRA’s current strategic plan 2020-2024, Mr Jallow said, adding that another goal is to optimise client service delivery for improved customer relations and corporate image.

‘Key reform initiatives being implemented by GRA are to enhance efficiency in the revenue collection process,’ he told the  third cohort of the GWCC members being encouraged to comply with tax matters by the GRA.

“It is my firm belief that this has greatly improved your understanding on the importance of paying of tax and duties, and its overall contribution in the development of the country,” he said, adding that the GRA’s engagement with GWCC “will be a continuous process” as the authority strives to transform and automate the revenue collection process.

Since the GRA launched the automated customs data (ASYCUDA world ) in June 2022, the implementation of the system has significantly increased the authority’s monthly revenue collection, he stated, saying the GRA is in the process of replacing the domestic tax system GAMTAXNET with a more robust web-based system (ITAS) to facilitate online payment and filing of tax returns, to significantly reduce the processing burden of paying tax.

In collaboration with other partners, GRA started the implementation of the Single Window platform that integrates all agencies involved in the Gambia international cross trade ecosystem to enhance efficiency in the clearance of goods, the deputy Commissioner General said.
