UDP to protest over ‘controversial’ ID card issuance abroad, others

The Youth Wing of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has formally written to the Inspector General of Police, requesting a permit to stage a peaceful protest over the ‘controversial’ issuance of Gambian ID cards currently taking place in Gabon and other countries, The Point can authoritatively report.

The permit request which is obtained by The Point and signed by Hagi Suwareh, the National Youth President of the UDP, stated: “In exercising our constitutional rights guaranteed under Section 25 (1)(d) of the Constitution of The Gambia, 1997, which allows for the holding of peaceful processions, and in adherence to the provisions of Section 5 (2) of the Public Order Act No. 7 of 1961 (Cap.22.01), we the members of the UDP National Youth Wing, wish to stage a peaceful procession to express our dissatisfaction with the ongoing overseas ID Cards issuance and the increase in Elections Nomination Fees.”

“We believe that to secure our collective futures, we must make our concerns known to the Honourable Members of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Interior.”
