The Turkish Embassy in Banjul yesterday commemorated the 101st anniversary of its founding as a Republic in a grand celebration and solemn ceremony at Ocean Bay in Bijilo.

This milestone event drew distinguished guests, government officials, diplomats, and members of the Turkish and Gambian communities who gathered to honour Türkiye’s journey as a Republic.

The Republic of Türkiye was formally established on October 29, 1923, under the visionary leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who led the nation in its transformation from the remnants of the Ottoman Empire into a modern, secular, and democratic state. Atatürk’s reforms redefined the country’s identity and laid the foundation for its modern institutions.

Speaking at the anniversary event, Fahri Turker Oba, the ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the Republic of The Gambia, emphasised the deep significance of the republic to Turkish identity and values. “For the Turkish people, the ‘Republic’ signifies much more than a political system. It is an embodiment of our resilience, unity, and commitment to peace,” he stated.

Reflecting on the geopolitical tensions around Türkiye’s borders, he added: “When we look at what is happening beyond our borders nowadays, we better understand and appreciate its meaning.”

Ambassador Oba underscored that Türkiye’s foreign policy remains rooted in Atatürk’s guiding principle of “peace at home, peace in the world.”

This philosophy, he explained, continues to guide Türkiye in its pursuit of regional and global stability, allowing it to serve as “an island of stability” amid current global conflicts, crises, and challenges.

He also expressed pride in the close ties between Türkiye and The Gambia, describing the two nations as “brotherly countries” bonded by shared values and mutual respect.

He highlighted the collaboration between the two countries in international forums, such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). “Our friendship is based on universal values, and we have a strong record of supporting each other’s initiatives on the international stage,” he noted.

The ambassador further commended The Gambia’s role in advocating for human rights, specifically referencing its case filed on behalf of the Rohingya people at the International Court of Justice and its principled stance against recent actions in Gaza and Lebanon. “We commend and support Gambian initiatives in the international arena,” he added.

On the economic front, Ambassador Oba shared that the Türkiye-Gambia trade volume surpassed 75 million dollars in 2023, with further growth anticipated. Türkiye has demonstrated its commitment to The Gambia’s economic development, focusing on partnerships that foster local prosperity. “We aim to contribute to The Gambia’s development, welfare, and prosperity,” he affirmed.

The ambassador mentioned several Turkish companies making strides in The Gambia, including Albayrak in port construction, Karpowership in energy supply, and Negmar in ferry operations, all key sectors for The Gambia’s infrastructure and economic growth. He also revealed that other Turkish firms are actively exploring partnerships with Gambian companies, signaling continued economic collaboration.

A statement read on behalf of Dr. Mamadou Tangara, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, by Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Defence, celebrated the longstanding relationship between The Gambia and Türkiye. Njie described the bilateral ties as “characterised by solidarity, dialogue, and collaboration,” underscoring the value that The Gambia places on Türkiye’s friendship and support.

He reiterated The Gambia’s eagerness to deepen this relationship, particularly with President Adama Barrow’s recent appointment as the Chair of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a role expected to bring The Gambia and Türkiye even closer.

He highlighted that “The Republic of Türkiye remains a significant partner to The Gambia, especially in areas such as security, defense, human capital development, trade and investment, and international cooperation.”

The Foreign Affairs minister finally extended his heartfelt appreciation to the President of Türkiye, His Excellency Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the Turkish government on behalf of the Gambian people, congratulating Türkiye on the 101st anniversary of the republic’s founding.
