Transport & Works Ministry assesses Kanilai ferry rehabilitation progress

The Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure Honorable Ebrima Sillah today  24th July, 2024 visited the Banjul Shipyard to assess the progress of rehabilitation  works on Kanilai Ferry which is currently dry- docked at the Banjul Shipyard Co.

The Minister was accompanied by Matarr Ceesay, Permanent Secretary and Ebrima Colley DPS Technical and others. The GM/Overseer of the Shipyard, Buba Njie and his senior management team together with General Manager Abdoulie Tambedou and team of the Gambia Ferry Services took the Minister and team on the conducted tour of the ferry in progress.

The visit enabled the entourage to have a firsthand information on the rehabilitation works and expressed satisfaction of the progress to date.

Furthermore, the completed stage of work includes chipping, scraping the underwater areas, sand blasting of underwater areas and application of anti-corrosive paint, as well as gouging out and cutting all damaged areas while the fabrication and welding works on the fender pipes among others are currently ongoing satisfactorily. The re-plating is progressing well while the painting will follow after the carpentry works are completed.

On the part of the engineering, the Engineering Services department provided a brief to the entourage on the stages of procurement and delivery of the four new marine diesel engines, cooling systems, clutches, cardan shaft systems, piping and hydraulics and Schottel rudder propulsion systems.

The Hon Minister thanked the teams and appreciated the achievements to date and urged speedier delivery of the outstanding areas in the ferry project as a whole to ensure that a second ferry starts plying the Banjul/Barra route as soon as possible.
