Havana, Jul 23 (Agencies) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez declared that the Summit of the Group of 77 plus China, to be held in this capital next September, is essential in the midst of the global multisectoral crisis.

In the context of the First Ordinary Period of Sessions of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba (parliament), the island's Minister of Foreign Relations stated that the meeting will take place at a time when the countries of the South are looking for a way to solve these problems within areas of independence and sovereignty.

Likewise, he said, it will be a very significant event in the face of the processes that are occurring on a global scale and will provide underdeveloped nations with strategies in that order, especially in the post-Covid-19 pandemic context.

He explained that the Summit will provide common and important visions for the actions of the multilateral group because it will be held prior to important international events such as the high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly and the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change COP28.

He stressed that the meeting in Havana, on September 15 and 16, will be very austere from an economic point of view, but very warm and hospitable, and that it will leave important marks for the Group and for developing nations in general.

In addition, he recalled that important international negotiation processes have taken place within the Group of 77 plus China, such as those related to the conference of the parties on climate change or others in the fields of finance.

In its capacity as president pro tempore of the negotiating bloc of developing countries, the island invites under the theme “Current development challenges; Role of science, technology and innovation”.

Since January of this year, Cuba assumed, for the first time, the pro tempore presidency of the Group of 77, with the commitment to advance the common interests of the South.
