The event underscored the strong judicial partnership between The Gambia and Nigeria and reaffirmed the judiciary’s dedication to upholding justice and public trust.
Chief Justice Jallow extended a warm welcome to Justice Coker, congratulating her on her appointment and assuring her of the judiciary’s full support. He expressed confidence in her ability to contribute significantly to the country’s legal system.
“We welcome Justice Ademine Coker to The Gambia, to our judiciary, and to the High Court bench,” he stated.
Highlighting her extensive experience, he noted, “We are confident that my lady will bring a wealth of expertise to the Gambian judiciary, which will be instrumental in enhancing the quality of justice in the country.” Justice Coker has 40 years of legal experience, including 25 years on the Lagos State bench in Nigeria.
Chief Justice Jallow also expressed deep appreciation to the Nigerian judiciary and government for their continued technical assistance.
“The Chief Justice of Nigeria responded swiftly and positively to our request for the deployment of a judge on technical assistance,” he noted, emphasising the strong collaboration between the two nations.
Speaking on the judiciary’s broader mission, Chief Justice Jallow stressed the need to maintain public trust.
“We must all work together to ensure the effective delivery of justice,” he urged, acknowledging the support of legal practitioners, stakeholders, and the public.
He pointed out the increasing demand for judicial services, stating: “Year after year, the number of people seeking justice through the courts continues to rise, by approximately 25 to 30% annually. This reflects the public’s confidence in our judiciary as a temple of justice.”
He also commended the judiciary’s recent achievements, noting that in 2024, over 6,000 cases were resolved out of 13,000 pending matters, a significant milestone. He encouraged his colleagues to continue their hard work and uphold the public’s trust.
Lawyer Nenneh Cham, president of the Gambia Bar Association, welcomed Justice Coker, commending her dedication, expertise, and fairness.
“Her appointment is a testament to her commitment to justice,” she said, emphasising the importance of ethical conduct and mutual respect between the bench and the Bar. “Though our roles differ, we share a common goal, the pursuit of justice,” she added, pledging the Bar’s full support.
Representing the Minister for Justice, Counsel Colley described the swearing-in as a momentous occasion, not only for Justice Coker but also for the judiciary’s ongoing commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
Quoting the late Chief Justice Bausley Aza and a South African judge, he highlighted the importance of understanding both legal principles and the real-life circumstances of those appearing before the court. He also extended gratitude to Nigeria for its continued technical assistance.
In her remarks, Justice Coker expressed gratitude to President Adama Barrow for her appointment and to Chief Justice Jallow and the judiciary for their warm reception.
“This appointment reflects the strong relationship between The Gambia and Nigeria and the trust the Gambian judiciary places in its Nigerian counterpart,” she stated.
She pledged to administer justice fairly and efficiently, guided by the law and her conscience. “I will do my utmost to uphold justice in accordance with the law and good conscience,” she affirmed, seeking divine guidance in her new role.
