Senegalese presidential election attracts 200 aspirants

Oct 4, 2023, 3:29 PM

A total of 200 candidates have expressed interest to run for presidency in the forthcoming presidential election in Senegal – which is scheduled for February 2024.

On September 29, the General Directorate for Elections provided interested parties with the sponsorship collection sheets in paper and electronic format as part of a “handing over and information session.” Will the sponsorship collection campaign, which has just opened, make it possible to contain this overflow of ambitions, and for good reason?

As this first stage of the campaign opens, no less than 170 including five women declared their candidacy.

Only the representative of the opponent Ousmane Sonko did not receive his file.

Under the reform adopted as a result of the national dialogue, which was held in June, any candidate must, in order for his candidacy to be ratified, present at least 44,559 valid sponsorships, or 0.6% of the electorate.

Main trap to avoid with a view to the examination of candidacy files by the Constitutional Council, scheduled between December 26, 2023 and January 12, 2024, duplicates between competing candidacies, each voter being able to grant sponsorship to only one candidate and pay deposit of 30 million CFA amounting to 3 million Dalasi.
