Apr 9, 2025, 10:55 AM

In a landmark announcement on Sunday, Senegal’s Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines, Birame Souleye Diop, revealed a dramatic reduction in electricity prices, dropping the cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) from D14 to D7. The minister credited this achievement to sweeping structural reforms in the energy sector, aimed at boosting efficiency and affordability for citizens.

Speaking on Radio Senegal, Diop highlighted the significance of the price cut, calling it a transformative step in the nation’s energy policy.

“These reforms are designed to lower production costs, enhance system performance, and ensure that energy becomes accessible to every Senegalese,” he said.

The move is being hailed as a crucial advancement toward social and economic justice, while also supporting Senegal’s ongoing energy transition.

With this reduction, the government hopes to ease financial burdens on households and businesses, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s push for sustainable and equitable growth.
