The donation showcased VDF’s unwavering commitment to poverty alleviation and community empowerment. The initiative does not only provide immediate relief but also reinforces the organisation’s dedication to long-term corporate social responsibility.
On Tuesday, Mr. Darboe through Vision Development Foundation distributed close to 4000 bags of D10KG of Sugar to various political parties, Organisations and Individuals, Village Development Committees (VDCs), National Assembly Members, and non-governmental organisations.
The National People’s Party (NPP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP) each received three hundred bags of sugar while other political parties and wards received 200 and 150 bags respectively.
Furthermore, 200 bags were donated to the Christian Council, 171 to the National Assembly, and 100 to people with disabilities.
Mr. Darboe, a leading traditional ambassador of supporting the most vulnerable people in this country during the holy month of Ramdan and Tobaski, has been out of the country for the past six months on health grounds.
Over the years, Mr. Darboe has been known for his generosity particularly during Ramadan and other feasts in which he would distribute food and animals to both Muslims and Christians in The Gambia.
Saihou Fofana, Public Relations Officer of VDF, commended Turo Darboe’s humanitarianism, stating that the distribution is aimed to reach communities throughout the month.
The bags of sugar were given to political parties to distribute among those they believe are underprivileged. “We believe that these people would more easily access the sugar through their political party,” Fofana said.
A representative of the United Democratic Party, Karafa Sonko, thanked VDF for its efforts in helping the Muslim population, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
He also noted that the coming together of all political parties demonstrates unity among Gambians. “The VDF could have called only one or two political parties to benefit from this gesture, but instead, they promoted inclusivity, which is commendable,” the UDP representative stated.
Lamin Saho, a representative of the National People’s Party (NPP), expressed appreciation for the Vision Development Foundation’s generosity and promised to distribute the bags of sugar to underprivileged communities within Kanifing Municipality and beyond.
Honorable Samba Jallow, National Assembly Member for Niamina Dankunkung, who represented the National Reconciliation Party (NRP), expressed his delight and recalled that a similar donation was made to all provincial National Assembly members. “Bringing all political parties together this time was a welcome initiative,” he said.
Ismaila Jallow, councilor for Suba Ward and deputy chairperson of Brikama Area Council, said the gesture would go a long way in helping vulnerable individuals across the region. “We received many requests from our people for sugar, rice, and oil, and this gesture from VDF came at the right time,” he stated.
