Senegalese religious leaders such as Association of the Imams and Bishop Benjamin Ndiaye on behalf of the Christian Community, have urged President Macky Sall to respect the polling date of 25 February 2024 or else, “it will be defined as constitutional coup d'état”.

President Macky Sall on Saturday announced he had postponed Senegal's planned Feb. 25 presidential election, citing security concerns.

Meanwhile, the ECOWAS Commission expresses concern over the circumstances that have led to the postponement of the elections and appeals to the competent authorities to expedite the various processes in order to set a new date for the elections.

The Commission further urges the entire
political class to prioritize dialogue and collaboration for transparent, inclusive and credible elections.
