“Where was your mother on the day of the incident?” the prosecutor asked.
“She was in the sitting room,” the accused replied.
“Did you go to the sitting room?” Prosecutor Jarra inquired.
“Yes,” Mr. Ceesay responded.
“Why?” asked the prosecutor.
“It was my niece who insulted me and I pursued her into the sitting room,” the accused went on.
“This is why you beat her up,” said Officer Jarra.
“I did not beat her up,” the accused told the court.
“But you raised your fist to beat her,” challenged Prosecutor Jarra.
“Yes, I raised my fist but I did not beat her. After she insulted me, she ran into the sitting room and hid behind one of the chairs. She shouted for help. It is my mother who spoiled her,” the accused said.
“Didn’t your mother advise you not to beat your niece?” enquired Prosecutor Jarra.
“No, because I did not beat her,” stated the accused.
“Your mother testified in court that you beat your niece,” Prosecutor Jarra put it to him. In response, the accused told the court that it was his mother who stated at the police station that she did not see him beating his niece. He went on to testify that his niece reported him at the police and said that it was he who beat her on her stomach while she was pregnant. He further adduced that his niece was holding her stomach, screaming.
It was put to him that all what he told the court was not true.
“God is my witness. All what I said is the truth. This was a set-up. My niece wanted me to be arrested. She reported me that I engage in drug dealing,” the accused told the court.
The presiding magistrate then asked him whether he has witnesses to call, and he answered in the negative. The case was subsequently adjourned to the 14th July, 2025, for judgment.
