Police to reinforce order to clear public highways and streets

Jan 15, 2025, 10:04 AM

The Gambia Police Force wishes to notify the public that the ongoing Operation Clear Public Highways and Roads, initiated over a year ago, will now enter its most decisive phase. Despite extensive efforts, public education, and repeated warnings issued to vendors and individuals occupying public spaces and streets, compliance remains unacceptably low.

This non-compliance continues to endanger public safety, disrupts traffic flow, and creates unnecessary hazards for road users. Let it be made clear: this will no longer be tolerated.

Effective immediately, anyone found occupying public spaces or streets will face strict enforcement measures. The GPF, in collaboration with its partners, will exercise all lawful force to ensure compliance. Noncompliance will result in the following consequences:

  1. Immediate eviction from the occupied space.
  2. Seizure of goods and properties found in violation of the law.
  3. Prosecution, with penalties including fines, confiscation of items, and other legal sanctions.

This operation is non-negotiable. The public is reminded that occupying public highways and streets is a clear violation of the law and poses serious risks to public safety. As law enforcers, it is our duty to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.

We urge all individuals and vendors currently occupying public spaces and streets to vacate immediately. The GPF will not tolerate further defiance, and any resistance will be met with lawful but firm measures.

Additionally, all cattle owners and individuals leaving their animals in public spaces are equally warned to adhere to this directive.

The Gambia Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining public safety and order and seeks the cooperation of all citizens and residents in adhering to this directive.
