The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad convened a strategic breakfast meeting on July 15, 2025, at the Atlantic Hotel in Banjul to formally introduce Hon. Sering Modou Njie as the newly appointed Foreign Minister of The Gambia.
The event brought together key players from the diplomatic community, including ambassadors, heads of international organisations, and senior officials from the Ministries of Information and Justice. The meeting served as a platform to foster dialogue, reaffirm commitments, and chart a forward-looking path in the country’s international relations.
In his inaugural address, Minister Njie spoke of his extensive background, 21 years of military service in The Gambia Armed Forces, nine years in diplomatic roles, and most recently, a three-year tenure as Minister for Defence. Holding academic qualifications in political science and international relations, he emphasised his readiness to take on this new portfolio with professionalism and purpose.
Reflecting on the importance of the gathering, Minister Njie described the meeting as a meaningful return to familiar ground recalling similar sessions from his past service that prioritised open dialogue and inter-agency cooperation. He expressed his deep appreciation for the diplomatic community’s vital role in promoting mutual understanding, development, peace, and international cooperation.
“This gathering marks the beginning of a more structured and consistent engagement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our esteemed partners,” he said. “It is also an opportunity to enhance transparency, foster collaboration, and deepen trust on issues of national and global significance.”
He emphasised that such informal yet strategic dialogues are essential to sharing government priorities, policy developments, and emerging challenges, while also allowing space for international partners to voice their perspectives and concerns. From trade and security to humanitarian cooperation and development, the minister said the goal is to build trust and advance shared objectives.
Looking ahead, minister Njie announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to develop formal communication mechanisms to ensure open, regular, and transparent exchanges. These systems will guide the ministry’s strategic direction, align with broader government objectives, and define areas of collaboration with foreign missions over the coming months and years.
Concluding his remarks, Minister Njie expressed optimism about his new role and a strong commitment to meaningful partnerships. “I look forward to working closely with each of you,” he said, “and I assure you of my full dedication and that of the ministry to professionalism, cooperation, and effective diplomacy.
As part of the day’s agenda, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice provided a briefing on the status of the 2024 Draft Constitution, highlighting its national significance and relevance to international stakeholders.
The Minister for Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services also presented an overview of government programmes and national priorities to offer deeper context into the current governance framework.
