Mentally challenged allegedly commits suicide

Mamadou Salieu Sumareh, a young man believed to be mentally unstable allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to death.

The unfortunate incident took place at Kerewan Samba Sira village in Lower Fulladu West District of Central River Region on Sunday 18th February, 2024.

The tragedy happened at a time when majority of his family members were busy at the village’s annual Qu’ranic recitation known as ‘Gamo’.

According to reports, the decease left a written note for family members, relatives, friends and neighbours as he sought for their forgiveness.

It’s reported that the deceased believed he was ostracised for being mentally ill, and therefore since he had “no future in this world”, he decided to take his own life.

According to a source, the deceased sent his elder brother’s wife to the shop, and  while his brother's wife was away, he wrote a note and left it on his bed before hanging himself to death, our source said.

Adama Sumareh, a brother to the late Mamadou Salieu, described the demise of his younger brother as sad and devastating. He added that the unfortunate incident took the whole family by surprise.

He explained that he received the information while in Serrekunda. He revealed that he was planning to have his brother join him in Serrekunda for them to work together.

The deceased was laid to rest on Monday 19 February 2024.
