A 20-year-old (name withheld) from Bakau nearly died from “Kush” locally known as Gina Bass in the early hours of Saturday morning 24th February 2024, according to a family source.

Kush is a type of drug believed to have originated from Sierra Leone and is made out of human bone and other harmful chemicals which could result in death or body malfunction after use.

A source who was an eye witness of the incident, says Kush was given to the man by one of his friends to smoke. “They were sitting at the junction until around 1 to 2 a.m. when the incident occurred. It was wrapped by one of his friends like a “bax” (marijuana) and given to him to smoke. He puffed it and started to misbehave to the extent that he nearly swallowed his tongue,” the witness revealed.

One of his family members explained that when the news reached them, they thought the boy was already dead, but fortunately, there was another boy among them who held his tongue and rushed him to the hospital.

“We were asleep when the news reached us. His friends were in a very panicked situation. They thought he would die before he could reach the hospital.”

By the time he arrived at the hospital his entire tongue was almost out of his mouth and he barely breathe. He was not able to talk properly because at that time he was weak and partly unconscious. The doctors had to sew his tongue on his lower lips so that he wouldn’t swallow it,” the victim's family told this reporter.

A family member confirmed that the victim spent the entire day at the hospital being monitored by doctors and nurses. She said that the man has now been discharged from the hospital and he’s recuperating.

The family is pleading with the authorities to put more measures to protect the youths from drug abuse.
