Macky Sall to meet President Diomaye Faye Friday

Jul 14, 2026, 7:49 AM

Former President Macky Sall is set to meet with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in Dakar on Friday, July 17, in what will be their first official encounter since the transfer of power in April 2024.

Sources close to Sall confirmed preparations are underway for his return to Senegal, with the meeting expected to feature prominently in coalition leaders’ upcoming agenda.

Symbolic Reunion

The audience carries significant symbolic weight. Since leaving office, Sall has resided in Morocco and maintained limited contact with Senegal’s new leadership. Friday’s meeting will therefore mark an unprecedented reunion between the current head of state and his predecessor.

UN Candidacy in Spotlight

Beyond protocol, discussions are expected to address Sall’s declared candidacy for Secretary‑General of the United Nations, a post he hopes to assume after António Guterres. Senegal’s official diplomatic stance on his bid has not yet been announced, and observers say Friday’s talks could prove decisive in shaping the country’s position.
