Nigerian author, academic and chairperson of the Association of West African Universities, Prof. Adullahi Bala, has described the recently demised Gambian Vice President Alieu Badara Joof as an articulate, spirited and forthright man who was passionate about the potential of The Gambia.

The scholar and professor made the remarks during the 8th international conference and 10th annual general meeting hosted by the University of The Gambia.

“During our visit to the University of The Gambia (UTG) in 2020, Prof. Ajum and Prof. Gomez led us in paying courtesy calls on some of the stakeholders in tertiary education sector in the Republic of The Gambia, including the then Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, His Excellency Badara Joof, who was to later become the vice president of the country,” he said.

“We learnt with great sadness of the passing away of Mr Joof yesterday. He was such an eloquent, articulate and spirited individual, who was very forthright and passionate about the potential of his country and the happening in the higher education sector of West Africa.

“I want to use this opportunity to condole with the leadership and the people of the Republic of The Gambia on this great loss. May God Almighty grant him eternal rest, comfort his family, his loved ones and the citizens of the Republic of The Gambia and grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.”

Prof. Bala thanked the former vice chancellor of UTG, Prof. Anjum, and the current Minister of Higher Education, Dr Pierre Gomez, whilst congratulating Prof. Herbert Robinson on his appointment as UTG’s vice chancellor.
