King Charles III meets Commonwealth leaders shortly before coronation

Ahead of the historic coronation of His Majesty (HM) King Charles III, leaders of the Commonwealth, who were in London to grace the occasion, on Saturday 4 May, met with the King at the Commonwealth Secretariat, in Marlborough House to show solidarity and support to the advancement of the Commonwealth.

His Majesty Charles III was officially crowned King of the United Kingdom 6 May 2023. He ascended to the throne in September 2022, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

The King has described the Commonwealth as a “cornerstone” of his life, expressing his unwavering support for the values, people and countries of the Commonwealth.

After their meeting with the Britsih monarch, the leaders convened a separate meeting to discuss issues of common interests with the main focus on youth empowerment, as this year has been designated the ‘Commonwealth Year of Youth’. 

His Excellency VP Jallow and entourage were later invited to attend the Buckingham Palace reception.

The Gambian delegation, headed by His Excellency Mohammed B.S Jallow, includes Hon. Mamadou Tangara, Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad; and Mrs. Cordu L. Jabang-Senghore, Permanent Secretary, Office of the Vice President.
