
Under the proposed law, the family of a deceased parliamentarian would pocket a gratuity if the NAM had served at least one year of their five-year term. Likewise, MPs who voluntarily resign or are ousted by their electorate would still walk away with a generous slice of taxpayer money. Even individuals who only step in to complete a residual term after the death, resignation, or recall of another NAM stand to benefit from the scheme.
The speaker of the Assembly, Hon Fabakary Tombong Jatta, declared in accordance with Order 65, the first reading of the National Assembly Salaries and Pensions Amendment Bill 2025 has been done.
“The Bill has been read a first time. The next stage of the Bill, National Assembly Salaries and Pensions Amendment Bill 2025 will be appointed during the subsequent sessions of the Assembly for the person in charge of the Bill to move a motion for the second reading in accordance with Order 66-2, which reads. At the conclusion of the proceedings on the first reading or on any subsequent stage of a Bill, the next stage may be taken either forthwith or upon a date to be determined, providing that second reading shall be taken no sooner than one working day after the first reading.”
The bill has been read first time in parliament and awaits the second reading for members to debate on the merits of the bill.
