The National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC) has paid tribute to Gambian artist, Mbye Gaye whose demise was announced on Sunday, 9 July 2023, and described him as a great loss to Gambian music and culture.

Director general of the NCAC, Hassoum Ceesay said Mr. Gaye represented the “best in Wollof folkloric music."

"Mbye had a sweet voice. He knew a lot of folkloric songs which he rendered in his own unique style.”

He added that Mbye was always eager to share his vast experiences, and also gave advice to the upcoming artists.

According to Mr. Ceesay, the late Mbye was a close confidante of the NCAC who participated in all the festivals that the NCAC organised starting from the Roots Festival, Banjul Demba, and the urban music festivals.

DG Ceesay said late Mbye and other mbalax artists like Koto Ngum, the drummer, and Faya Ngum dominated the Banjul music scene in the 2000s with their rich repertoire. "Thanks to his love for music, he toured many countries and recorded numerous songs and video clips," he recalled.

On behalf of the Honourable Minister, Board of NCAC, staff, and all Gambian artists, Mr. Ceesay conveys his deepest condolences to his family and fans.
