The director of Internal Audit at the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), John S.L. Gomez, has assured taxpayers of more engagement to deepen their understanding on the Gambia Revenue Laws and the nature of taxes administered by GRA.

He said this would help (GRA) to perform well in the collection of much needed revenue for national development.

He cited that the more taxpayers understand their rights and obligations, the more positive revenue performance for GRA.

He said GRA would not relent in its efforts to further engage taxpayers through its Educations Unit to enlighten the taxpayers on the roles and mandates of GRA and the significance of tax payment for national development.

According to Mr. Gomez, who was speaking at Mansakonko during the last 2-day seminar on tax education, the overall objective of the seminar was to sensitize and deepen the participants’ understanding on their rights and obligations in the processes of mobilising revenue to support national development programmes.

“The Authority had launched the Automated Customs Data (ASYCUDA World) in June 2022, and since its implementation, the system has significantly increased the Authority’s monthly revenue collection. Director Gomez revealed.

According to Mr. Gomez, the seminar was also part of the stakeholders’ engagement with taxpayers and the general public about the mandates of GRA and its role in economic development as enshrined in the revenue laws.

“Today’s seminar was an opportunity to avail the participants to understand the tax laws, processes and procedures governing revenue administrations to promote compliance” he told participants.

“The GRA’s engagement with you will be a continuous process as it strives to transform and automate the revenue collection processes to enhance efficiency and boost our revenue collection.”

Mr. Gomez further expressed confidence that the forum would generate remarkable understanding and cooperation between GRA, LRR Regional Authorities and the business community in enhancing voluntary tax compliance among others.

Mr. Gomez described the seminar as first engagement in LRR since the appointments of some of the regional authorities.

“As representatives of the government, it is prudent that the district authorities understand the tax laws, processes and procedures governing revenue administrations to promote compliance,” he stressed.

GRA internal director thanked the French Development Agency for funding the programme and the government of The Gambia for the support and cooperation in strengthening the Authority’s taxpayer education programmes and implementing tax reforms.
