Man charged with defilement

K. Sillah, a 61-year-old, is standing trial on a charge of defilement contrary to section 5 (1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2013.

According to the particulars of the offence, the accused on the 7th day of February 2023, in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of The Gambia, unlawfully had carnal knowledge of a girl (name withheld), thereby committing an offence.

The accused denied the charge and said he never had sexual intercourse with the girl.

According to the prosecutors’ investigation, the girl was sent to return a basin to one of her aunties in the neighbourhood. While going, she was intercepted by the alleged accused and she avoided him.

The investigation revealed that when the girl was coming back from her aunty, she saw the accused on the roadside standing and she changed her direction again but the accused followed her.

The complainant said while she was walking, he pushed her down and forced her to have intercourse with her. It was around 7 p.m. and no one could be seen in the neighbourhood, the findings indicated. The case is adjourned till 30 August for continuation of the hearing.
