The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) on Monday 9 December 2024 commenced a five-day training on Revenue Laws for 25 staff from different departments within GRA.

The training was organised by the Authority’s Directorate of Legal and Board Services at Senegambia Beach Hotel.

Speaking at the opening event, Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe recalled that GRA was established by law and entrusted with the mandate to serve as the government’s principal agent for revenue administration. “This includes assessing, collecting and enforcing revenue on behalf of the government.”

“The GRA Act formally designates the Authority as the primary revenue collector, ensuring the effective administration and enforcement of the nation’s revenue laws.”

Abdulrahman Bah, head of Legal Dept. said the programme aims to enhance the capacity of the staffs, particularly those in operational departments to ensuring that their actions are guided by a comprehensive understanding of the laws we administer.

According to him, over 350 staff members have already benefited from the training, acquiring valuable insight into revenue laws that directly impact GRA’s operations.

During this training, participants would engage with a range of critical topics, including GRA Act, which lays the foundation of the Authority; the Income Tax and Value Added Tax Act; the Customs Act and

The laws governing stamp duty among others.

He said the participants will gain practical insight into the procedures and processes within the Domestic and Customs Dept., ensuring balance understanding of both theoretical and operational aspects.

“We firmly believe that implementing effective employee development programmes not only strengthens staff competency but also boosts job satisfaction.”
