According to the union, the temporary suspension of the boycott is grounded in the “Principles of Good Faith” contained in the Terms of Reference guiding the discussions.
The GPU further stated that its decision was also in response to PURA’s move to observe what it described as a “technical pause” in the development of the proposed regulations while consultations continue.
“As a result, all media houses and journalists are urged to resume coverage of events and media engagements hosted by the Ministry and PURA until further notice,” the statement noted.
The boycott was initially declared by the GPU in protest against the proposed media regulations, which sparked concerns within the media fraternity over their potential impact on press freedom and independent journalism in The Gambia.
The latest development signals a possible easing of tensions between media stakeholders and regulatory authorities as dialogue continues on the future of media regulation in the country.
