GPU calls for peaceful campaigns, media safety ahead of 2026 Dec poll

The President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), Isatou Keita, has called on political parties, candidates, state institutions, journalists, and citizens to uphold peace, tolerance, and democratic values as the country prepares for the nomination of candidates for the December 5, 2026 presidential election.

In a statement issued ahead of the nomination process, Keita described the period as a defining moment in The Gambia's democratic journey, emphasizing that the nomination of candidates is more than a procedural requirement.

"The nomination process marks a significant milestone in the electoral process and in our national conversation about leadership, accountability, and the future we seek to build together," she said.

The GPU urged political actors to conduct campaigns based on issues and ideas rather than hostility and division.

"Elections should be a contest of ideas, not hostility; of vision, not division," the statement noted, adding that voters deserve clear policy proposals and practical solutions to the country's challenges.

The Union also cautioned against personal attacks, hate speech, misinformation, disinformation, and inflammatory rhetoric, warning that such actions undermine public confidence and weaken democratic discourse.

The GPU highlighted the important role the media will play during the election period, calling on journalists and media organizations to uphold the highest professional and ethical standards.

According to the statement, accuracy must prevail over speed, while verification should take precedence over speculation.

"Every report, headline, image, and social media post should be guided by the principles of fairness, independence, and public interest," Keita said.

The Union further reminded journalists to prioritize their safety and security while covering political activities and election-related events.

Journalists were advised to remain aware of their surroundings, properly identify themselves, maintain communication with editors and colleagues, and avoid situations that may unnecessarily expose them to harm.

Media houses were also urged to ensure that reporters assigned to election coverage are adequately prepared and provided with the logistical support needed to perform their duties effectively.

The GPU encouraged journalists to strengthen their digital security practices and exercise caution when handling information shared through social media platforms.

The statement warned of coordinated disinformation campaigns that often intensify during election periods and stressed the importance of verifying user-generated content, protecting sources, and safeguarding personal data.

The Union called on all stakeholders to reject hate speech, intimidation, harassment, and attacks against journalists.

While reaffirming that freedom of expression remains a cornerstone of democracy, the GPU stressed that it should never be used to justify incitement, discrimination, or actions that threaten social cohesion.

The statement also urged security services to carry out their duties with professionalism, impartiality, and respect for fundamental freedoms, emphasizing that journalists must be allowed to work freely and safely without interference, obstruction, or intimidation.

As election activities intensify, the GPU announced that it has designated a Safety Officer who will remain on standby throughout the electoral period to receive reports, respond to incidents, coordinate assistance, and address concerns raised by media practitioners.

Journalists were encouraged to promptly report threats, harassment, intimidation, restrictions on access to information, or any interference with their work.

"A free press can only thrive when journalists are able to work safely, confidently, and without fear, and the GPU stands ready to support those who find themselves at risk," the statement said.

The Union concluded by reaffirming its commitment to defending press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and supporting a peaceful, credible, and transparent electoral process.

It called on Gambians to ensure that the 2026 election season is remembered not for tension and division, but for the maturity, tolerance, and democratic spirit of the Gambian people.
