Man gets D58M bail over false pretence

kanifing magistrate court

Magistrate B. Sowe of the Kanifing Magistratesโ€™ Court yesterday granted bail to one Babucarr Jobarteh in the sum of D58,700,000 for allegedly obtaining goods by false pretence. This followed the plea of not guilty by the accused.

Babucarr Jobarteh, the accused, was ordered to deposit D10,000,000 cash and provide five Gambian sureties who should produce three title deeds worth D15,000,000 each located within the Kanifing Municipality. They should also swear to an affidavit of means and surrender their ID cards to the registrar of the court. They should secure the presence of the accused when he is needed by the court.

It was alleged by prosecutors that sometime between January and March, 2026, at Fajara, in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of The Gambia, the accused, Babucarr Jobarteh, obtained some bags of rice worth D58,550,000 from one Ebrima Camara in the pretext that he will pay him at a later date, which representation he knew to be false or believed to be false.

He was represented by Counsel Edward Gomez while the IGP was represented by Inspector Cherno Baba Jallow and Cadet inspector Laurance Mendy.

The prosecution team is expected to make a line-up of their witnesses on the 17th November, 2026.
