The minister for Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has announced major reforms to strengthen the media sector, enhance government transparency, and combat misinformation.

Speaking at the Ministerial Town Hall meeting on September 12, 2025, Dr. Ceesay said the creation of the Ministry in 2022 was part of a wider strategy to build a modern and inclusive communications system that promotes accountability and responsible journalism.

He highlighted that the ministry oversees the Department of Information Services, the Gambia Printing and Publishing Corporation, the Gambia Radio and Television Services, Digital Gambia Limited, and the Information Commission. Each institution is being restructured to align with the government’s vision of a transparent and responsive information sector.

Dr. Ceesay said the Gambia News Agency has been revived to provide reliable government information, while the Access to Information Act is being fully implemented with training for information officers across ministries.

He also noted that Digital Gambia Limited is spearheading the country’s transition from analog to digital broadcasting, a project valued at $11 million.

The Minister announced that the government would introduce a support scheme for private media houses to ensure sustainability and strengthen press freedom.

He added that GRTS is being modernised to become one of West Africa’s leading broadcasters, while the Gambia Printing and Publishing Corporation is expanding its capacity to improve service delivery.

Addressing the rising threat of misinformation, Dr. Ceesay revealed plans to establish a National Misinformation and Disinformation Response Center, powered by artificial intelligence and supported by ECOWAS, to monitor content, verify information, and provide fact-checking services.

He states that Public engagement initiatives have also been strengthened, including bi-weekly Mansa Kunda town halls, monthly press conferences, and the expansion of The Gambia Daily newspaper to twice weekly, with plans to become a daily publication.

Dr. Ceesay concluded by pledging that the government will continue to ensure that every Gambian has access to timely and accurate information, emphasising that transparency and inclusive communication remain central to good governance.
