Girls outperform boys in 2024 Grade 9 Exams

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) has officially announced that a total number of 88 students from Grade 9 have emerged with aggregates 6 in the 2024 GABECE exams.

This announcement was formally made by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education at a ceremony held on Friday at its conference hall in Banjul.

According to MoBSE, there’s a remarkable increase in the number of students with aggregate 6 in 2024 compared to 2023 and 2022, adding that out of the 88 students with aggregate 6 in 2024, 32 are boys and 56 are girls.

The data distribution showed that students with aggregate 6 indicated that among the 88 students with aggregate 6, (38%) were from the public schools and (63%) were from the private schools.

In his GABECE 2024 Examination overview, Andrew Gomez, director for Performance Management and Evaluation at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, revealed that a total of 30,419 candidates registered in 2024 GABECE exam, of which 29,936 candidates’ results were processed and graded, representing 98.4%.

He informed that the remaining 483 candidates’ marks are currently outstanding due to missing Continuous Assessment Scores of Students (CASS) marks or unresolved, while 12 candidates’ results are withheld.

Gomez further explained that the number of candidates with pass mark or credit in the four core subjects has increased in the core subjects in 2024 compared to 2023, adding a similarly pattern was observed in the volume of students with credit mark in the core subjects.

He stated that the number of candidates with aggregate 42 or less has consistently increased for girls from 2022 to 2024, saying that there are more girls than boys with an aggregate score of 42 or less over the last three years.

He further revealed that nationwide, this indicator has increased in 2024 by 0.6% point compared to 2023 and 2022.
