Gambian writer wins 5M CFA Senegambia Book Prize

Dr. Morro Krubally, a Gambian writer, was on Tuesday, 27 February 2024 presented a cheque for five million CFA as the winner of the prestigious Senegambia Book Prize, a literary accolade aimed at recognising talented writers and promoting excellence in literature.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, which was held at the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute in Kanifing, Isatou Drammeh, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Culture, describedthe prestigious prize as a symbol of the collective appreciation for the literary arts and the profound impact it has on societies.

“As we celebrate this inaugural Senegambia Book Prize, let us also reflect on the broader significance of this cultural collaboration. Beyond monetary rewards, this initiative represents a bridge of understanding and dialogue between The Gambia and Senegal, fostering greater cultural exchange and mutual respect,” she stated.

DPS Drammeh further stated that the ministries of Culture of both countries would work together to strengthen the bond forged over centuries of shared history and cooperation.

“Through initiatives like the Senegambia Book Prize, we reaffirm our commitment to preserve our cultural legacy and promote literary excellence for generations to come,” she said.

She finally called for unity and collaboration between The Gambia and Senegal for the mutual interest of the two nations.

Hassoum Ceesay, Director General of the National Centre for Arts and Culture, said the prize signifies the cordial relationship between The Gambia and Senegal, noting that The Gambia and Senegal are close neighbours that have a lot in common.

It is important to note that some years ago, the Gambian Minister of Tourism and Culture, Honourable Hamat NK. Bah; the Senegalese Minister of Cultural Heritage; and other officials met in Kafferine, Senegal, and signed an agreement called the Kafferine Agreement, which is meant to strengthen the bond, shared history and cooperation forged over centuries.
