Gambia rescues Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Bakary

The government of The Gambia informs the public that Mr. Issa Tchiroma Bakary arrived in the country on the 7th of November 2025. Mr. Bakary is a Cameroonian opposition leader who contested in the recently conducted elections in the Republic of Cameroon. He is being hosted temporarily in The Gambia purely on humanitarian grounds in the spirit of African solidarity and for the purpose of ensuring his safety while discussions continue to pursue a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the post-electoral tensions in Cameroon.

The Government of The Gambia reaffirms its commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all AU Member States, and to the principle that The Gambia will not be used as a base for subversive activity against any state.

The Government is engaging with relevant regional partners, including the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to support a peaceful and negotiated outcome, and will continue to keep the Gambian public informed.
