In Senegal, the Electoral Commission is only legitimate authority to postpone an election.
“I want to clarify so that there is no ambiguity, that the Constitutional Council I created in 1992 remains the ultimate guarantor of our institutions and our democracy. It is up to him and he alone to say the right and make the decisions necessary for all regarding the electoral calendar and respect for the duration of the presidential term,” former President Diouf clarified.
He therefore asked the Senegalese people, their political class and their leaders to show restraint and integrity by applying to the letter the provisions of their Constitution while preserving the civil liberties acquired from a hard time in the construction of their democracy.
“I renew to the Senegalese people my sincere and unwavering affection as well as my appreciation for the long years of trust in their service,” he added.
“My dear compatriots, As you know, since I left power on April 1, 2000, I have always abstained from any comment on Senegalese political life. Faithful in this to the republican line drawn by President Léopold Sédar Senghor, I decided to break the oath I took because our country is experiencing an unprecedented institutional crisis.” he also said.
