“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Sir Shridath Ramphal, who served as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth from 1975 -1990. He died on Friday 30th August at the age of 95.

A towering figure in international diplomacy, Sir Ramphal will always be remembered for his decades of diplomatic excellence and statesmanship in his native Guyana, the Caribbean and the wider world. As a legal luminary, an advocate of social justice and diplomat, he fought against apartheid in South Africa, advocated for the rights of small nations, and dedicated his life to serving the world.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones, the government and people of Guyana and the Commonwealth community for the loss of this giant pillar of global peace, unity and harmony.”
