Dr. Jahou Faal attends World TVET League’s inaugural confab

The inaugural meeting of the World TVET League (WTL), initiated by the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), was held on November 20, 2024, in Tianjin, China, marking a significant milestone in the global landscape of TVET.

The Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (ATUPA) with headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, was represented by its Secretary General, Dr. Jahou Samba Faal, Gambian National and former Director General of the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI), now University of Science and Technology (USET)

The World TVET League (WTL) is an open, non-profit, and non-governmental multilateral platform dedicated to advancing technical and vocational education and training (TVET) worldwide. It is comprised of TVET institutions, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, industry organizations, and enterprises from around the globe, and operates on an equal and voluntary basis. It aims to create platforms for promoting best practices, formulating and publishing standards, and encouraging innovation and research in TVET. Key initiatives will include the Global TVET Prize, an international certification system for TVET majors, the World Vocational College Skills Competition, and the establishment of an international TVET research journal.

This landmark event celebrated the induction of founding council members and recognized ATUPA as a founding member of this esteemed organization.

The WTL aims to create platforms for promoting the best practices, formulating and publishing standards, and encouraging innovation and research in TVET. Key initiatives will include the Global TVET Prize, an international certification system for TVET majors, the World Vocational College Skills Competition, and the establishment of an international TVET research journal.

The General Assembly elected the Council members, highlighting their influence and contributions across sectors and regions. ATUPA’s election underscores its vital role in shaping educational policies and practices within the context of African TVET. Recognizing the responsibilities that come with this leadership position, ATUPA views the establishment of WTL as a unique opportunity to foster a global community dedicated to empowering youth and driving socioeconomic advancement.

As Vice Chair of the WTL, ATUPA Secretary General, Dr Jahou Samba Faal, encourages all its member institutions to engage proactively in WTL activities. Their participation is essential for enhancing connectivity and effectiveness in our collective efforts. We are committed to cultivating strong communication, adhering to the WTL Charter, and maximizing the impact of our initiatives. ATUPA envisions the WTL as a leading force in addressing the global need for practical training. By leveraging our collective strengths, we strive to develop a highly skilled youth prepared to tackle the challenges of the modern world.

In alignment with the laws and regulations of all member countries, WTL is dedicated to pooling high-quality resources and connecting governments, TVET institutions, industry, and enterprise partners.

The meeting welcomed leaders from various sectors, all committed to enhancing technical and vocational education. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as participants collectively acknowledged their responsibilities in supporting youth empowerment and fostering economic growth. During the event, the founding council members of the WTL were officially announced, with ATUPA being elected as Vice Chair of the Council, reflecting its significant contributions to TVET in the region.

At the closing ceremony of the meeting on 22 November, ATUPA was awarded the inaugural World TVET Prize during the World Vocational and Technical Education Development Conference (WVTEDC). The award was received on behalf of ATUPA by Secretary Jahou Samba Faal. This prestigious recognition, established by the World TVET League (WTL), honors exceptional contributions to the development and innovation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).  ATUPA was one of three awardees for their outstanding efforts in enhancing the voice, value, and recognition of global TVET. The World TVET prize aims to set benchmarks and role models, contributing to a brighter future through education worldwide. The recognition aligns with ATUPA’s mission to promote lifelong learning and empower individuals with skills necessary for success in today’s economy.
