Dr. Jagne appointed chair of GNOC Anti-Doping and Sports Medicine Committee

The managing director of Africmed International Hospital, Dr. Omar Jagne, has been duly appointed and inaugurated as chair of Anti-Doping and Sports Medicine Committee of the Gambia National Olympic Committee GNOC. 

Dr. Jagne, a prominent health expert, was inaugurated alongside various commissions and committees on Wednesday 29 October at a colorful ceremony held at GNOC Conference Room.

Jagne's appointment as chairperson of the Anti-doping and Sports Medicine Committee was based on merit, dedication and professionalism in the medical industry of The Gambia, according to the Executive Director of GNOC,  Muhamed Janneh,  shortly before the inaugural ceremony.

According to the Executive Director GNOC, Dr. Omar Jagne's participatory role in driving the medical sector is highly recognised and respected. 

He is a medical expert with integrity and professionalism who always works diligently to achieve a result. Dr. Jagne is down to earth with a variety of experience in the health sector."

He said that the immense contribution of Dr. Jagne towards the improvement of the health sector is immeasurable. “There is no iota of doubt that with his potential experience, Dr. Omar Jagne will live up to expectations as chair of the Medical and Anti-Doping Committee of GNOC."

“We have trust in his potential in leading the Medical and Anti-Doping Committee of the GNOC.”

The committee plays a crucial role in preventing doping, enhancing medical care, and upholding the integrity of sport, in line with the standards set by the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA and the National Anti-Doping Organisation NADO .

Among the key responsibilities of the Committee are:

  1. Anti-Doping Compliance and oversight; Thus, to ensure compliance with WADA code and international standards on anti-doping, collaboration with NADO and international bodies to facilitate in-competition and out-of-competition testing,  educate athletes and officials on anti-doping rules, rights, and responsibilities.
  2. Medical support for Athletes’; thus  coordinate the provision of medical services for national teams during training and competitions, promote preventive health measures, injury management, and access to sports medicine, develop and maintain athlete health records in compliance with data protection standards among a host of others.

In his acceptance, Dr. Jagne hailed the GNOC for the trust bestowed on him, promised and outlined his key priorities including development/training of personnel in sports medicine and Anti- Doping, Education/Information sharing among others.

“This is a responsibility entrusted to all the heads of commissions and committees for the next three years."

Dr. Jagne is also representing the Gambia at the regional Anti-Doping Organization Board that comprise the following countries: Burundi, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Each country has one representative.
