Court demands legal rep for man who hacked wife with cutlass

The High Court in Banjul yesterday before Justice E. Jaiteh ordered legal representation for the man who allegedly cut his wife with a cutlass.

The court stated that the accused was charged with a capital offence of attempted murder and that was not a bailable offence, adding that the accused had informed the court that he could not afford the service of a lawyer.

It would be recalled that the accused Gorgi (Yuga) Sowe was charged with attempt to murder, grievous harm, acts intended to cause grievous harm, wounding, and domestic violence.

According to the particulars of the offence, Gorgi (Yugo) Sowe, on 16 November 2023 at Brikama Jalambang in the Kombo Central District of the West Coast Region, with the intent to cause the death of Amie Sowe, hacked her with a cutlass causing her fatal injuries in her legs and arms, disfiguring and disabling her and other parts of her body, thereby committed an offence.

Following the incident, the Anti-Crime Unit promptly arrived at the scene and facilitated the arrest of Gorgi (Yuga) Sowe, who was attempting to flee.

Upon the team's arrival, they discovered the victim, the man's wife, lying in a critical condition, having sustained multiple severe lacerations to both legs.

During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of the alleged weapon, a cutlass, which was recovered from his residence, in his bed and clothing.

The victim received immediate medical attention and was initially rushed to Brikama Hospital. Subsequently, she was transferred to Ndemban Clinic, where she remains admitted for further medical treatment and care.
