Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, leader of the Citizens Alliance (CA) and Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Service, has reaffirmed his party’s commitment to the grand alliance led by the National People’s Party (NPP), pledging full support for President Adama Barrow’s bid for a third mandate in the upcoming December 5, 2026 election.
Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday at Paradise Suit hotel, Dr. Ceesay recalled that the Citizens Alliance formally joined the NPP coalition in October 2022, a partnership that has since expanded to include ten political parties. He emphasised that the alliance is united in ensuring President Barrow’s re-election, describing the choice before Gambians as one between “progress” and “retrogression.”
Transformative Achievements: Dr. Ceesay highlighted what he described as unprecedented achievements under President Barrow’s leadership: On Infrastructure: Over 1,500 kilometers of roads built using local government funds, including the landmark Hakalang and Kiang West roads. On Education: More than 6,000 classrooms constructed, averaging 11 per week, ensuring schools within a two-kilometer radius for children nationwide.
Healthcare: Expansion of health facilities, equipment, and a community ambulance system to improve maternal care.
Energy and Water: Electricity access increased from 40% to over 90%, alongside major water projects like WASIM and OIC.
Democracy and Security: No political prisoners, independent judiciary, and Gambia ranked among Africa’s safest nations.
Communication and Transparency: Under his ministry, Dr. Ceesay pointed to initiatives such as the Mansukunda Programme, which brings ministers before the public biweekly, and the Minister Programme, a weekly radio broadcast across eight stations. He also cited the establishment of a Misinformation Response Centre to counter manipulated content.
Criticism of the Opposition: Dr. Ceesay dismissed the opposition as reactive and lacking a clear agenda, accusing them of focusing on corruption, crime, and tribalism without offering viable alternatives. He criticized the United 66-Point Agenda manifesto as contradictory and uncosted, arguing that it fails to present a credible plan for governance.
Grassroots Engagement: The Citizens Alliance announced a 10-day grassroots tour across the West Coast Region and parts of Kanifing Municipality, beginning October 26, aimed at debunking misinformation and reinforcing the message of continuity and progress.
Confidence in the Electoral Commission: Dr. Ceesay concluded by expressing CA’s “unflinching support” for the Independent Electoral Commission, affirming confidence in its capacity, integrity, and independence to deliver a free and fair election.
