His Excellency President Adama Barrow has appointed Chief Alh. Yaya Jarjusey, the chief of Jarra West as new Paramount Sefo (chief) of The Gambia effective January 1, 2026.

This role is mandated by Section 131B of the Local Government Act 2002, which states that a Paramount Sefo should be appointed by the President for a two-year term on a rotational basis.

It's worth noting that this appointment comes after previous discussions and criticisms from National Assembly Members (NAMs) regarding the delay in appointing a Paramount Chief.

Chief Jarjusey is a prominent traditional leader known for advocating for agricultural development, environmental protection (including anti-plastic bag campaigns), and improved local justice systems.

He currently serves as the head chief of Jarra West District. He had actively campaigned for a ban on plastic bags, promoted improved agricultural techniques, and supported national development projects.

Reports from 2022 indicated that his district and leadership are affiliated with the National People's Party (NPP).

He is also a fierce advocate for better infrastructure for district tribunals to ensure better justice delivery.

Chief Jarjusey was reinstated as the Chief of Jarra West prior to August 2015, following a period where he was relieved of the position in November 2008. He had served previously, as noted in reports from April 2002, and remained in office as of 2025.
