Commissioner General Yankua Darboe of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), has outlined series of infrastructural developments undertaken by GRA over the past few years, stressing they’re part of a strategic plan for revenue mobilisation.

Darboe was speaking at the official opening of GRA’s state-of-the-art facility in Jarra Soma last week constructed by AK Constructions Ltd under a Delegated Management Contract with GAMWORKS at the cost of D16 million.

“Furthermore, an additional D3 million has been invested in furnishing this facility to the highest standard. This facility will serve both as the Soma Tax Office and a residence for our staff posted in Jarra soma. We have also been generous enough to offer an office space to the SIS to facilitate the performance of their functions,” he pointed out.

“It is important for me to highlight that every single butut of this expenditure was fully funded by GRA. This was paid out of the subvention we received and prudently managed during the period of this project.”

He described the facility as a strategic infrastructure roadmap that the GRA Board and Management have been aggressively pursuing over the past years as and not an isolated achievement.

“It will interest you to know that in the past few years, we have completed the following infrastructure projects:

  1. The construction of an additional floor both at the Revenue House in Banjul and at Kanifing Revenue House
  2. In 2022 we successfully constructed the Revenue House Annex in Banjul
  3. In 2023, we constructed a modern office complex at Tanji to serve as the Tanji Customs Post
  4. Today, we are officially inaugurating the Soma Tax Office and Staff Residence.”
  5. “We are not stopping here. I am pleased to inform you that a contract has already been awarded for the construction of our Brikama Tax Office. The construction works are expected to be completed within 14 months.”

“Additionally, we are currently in the process of awarding a contract for the construction of a two-storey state-of-the art Customs Office at Amdallai.”

“Honorable Minister, distinguished guests, the evidence of these ongoing projects clearly demonstrate that GRA is investing heavily in infrastructure development. We believe that these investments are vital in modernizing tax administration in The Gambia. As we modernize our tax systems, it is also imperative that we invest in our infrastructure to afford our taxpayers and staff a convenient and modern working environment.”

He thanked the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs for the continued support and cooperation over the years.

“However, as you can clearly see, the scale of our development initiatives has expanded significantly. On the basis of these ongoing projects and the Authority’s heavy investment in infrastructure, we respectfully urge that consideration be given to increase our subvention, so that we may continue to strengthen revenue administration and service delivery across the country.”

“As we celebrate this occasion, it is only fitting that we extend our profound gratitude to those who made this dream a reality. Our sincere appreciation goes to AK Construction Ltd and our partners, GAMWORKS. We say thank you for a job well done. Your dedication has resulted in this quality structure we are all proud of.”
